Maitri

Maitri, a nonprofit organization, is dedicated to supporting South Asian women who are dealing with domestic abuse, cultural displacement, or unresolved conflicts. Its mission is to provide a safe and nurturing environment for these women, offering a range of services to help them navigate through these challenging situations. Maitri offers referrals to mainstream organizations, providing valuable resources and guidance. It also offers informal peer counseling, allowing women to share their experiences and find comfort in the company of others who have gone through similar struggles.

Furthermore, Maitri provides free transportation for its clients, ensuring they can access the services they need without facing additional financial burdens. The organization also offers support group facilities and translation/interpretation services, breaking down language barriers and promoting a sense of community. Additionally, Maitri assists women with resume and job application preparation, aiming to help them secure employment and become financially independent.

In cases where legal assistance is required, Maitri offers financial support. This could be for legal services, counseling, rental and living expenses, school tuition, or driving lessons. For women who have left abusive situations, Maitri operates an 18-bed facility where they and their children can find refuge. Within this facility, Maitri provides in-house legal advocacy, certified by the Bureau of Immigration Appeals, offering further protection and support to its clients.
