The mission of Pacific Lutheran University is to educate students for lives of thoughtful inquiry, service, leadership, and care – for other people, for the community, and for the earth.

    PLU offers a diverse range of academic programs, including 39 majors and 60 minors, as well as graduate and professional programs in areas such as business, creative writing, education, marriage and family therapy, kinesiology, and nursing. The university helps over 2,600 students from various backgrounds, faiths, races, socio-economic groups, sexual orientations, ages, and nationalities to discern their vocations through coursework, mentorship, and internships at world-class Puget Sound-area businesses and institutions.

    PLU is committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse student body. For the 2022-23 academic year, 41 percent of incoming first-year students were first-generation students, meaning neither of their natural or adoptive parents had received a bachelor's degree. Fifty-three percent of students identified as students of color, and 37 percent were Pell Grant-eligible. The university has been a pioneer in international education, being the first American university to have study-away classes on all seven continents simultaneously. PLU is also the first private university on the West Coast to receive the prestigious Senator Paul Simon Award for Campus Internationalization.
