Pittsburghers For Public Transit

Pittsburghers for Public Transit, a grassroots union, is dedicated to advocating for more equitable, affordable, and accessible public transit. Comprised of transit workers, riders, and community members, this organization strives to ensure that no communities are left behind in the provision of public transit services. Their mission is to create a transit system that caters to the needs of all, fostering an inclusive and equitable environment for everyone.

In pursuit of this mission, Pittsburghers for Public Transit has demonstrated significant achievements. In 2022, the organization successfully launched a low-income fare pilot program, serving 14,000 households receiving SNAP benefits in Allegheny County. This initiative aimed to make public transit more affordable for a vulnerable section of the community, thereby increasing accessibility. Additionally, Pittsburghers for Public Transit secured a seat on Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey's Infrastructure and Environment Transition Team. This placement allowed the organization to influence policy decisions relating to public transit, ultimately leading to the adoption of many of its recommendations into the Administration's policy agenda.

Moreover, Pittsburghers for Public Transit played a pivotal role in restoring a bridge serving the Swissvale busway station. Over 40 residents voiced their concerns regarding transit access, and the organization successfully advocated for its restoration. Furthermore, transit riders organized by Pittsburghers for Public Transit managed to stop the Mon-Oakland Connector shuttle road and divert the funding towards other community projects, such as sidewalk connections, traffic calming, community recreation centers, and affordable housing. These achievements highlight Pittsburghers for Public Transit's commitment to improving public transit and ensuring that it serves the needs of all communities, without leaving any behind.
