Shelter Foundation

The Shelter Foundation, a dedicated organization, is committed to wildlife conservation through the enhancement of rural lands and education of others to do the same. Their mission is twofold: acquiring or leasing land to create and promote wetlands, hardwood forests, and the general improvement of wildlife habitat, and educating individuals to follow suit.

The foundation's efforts have been primarily driven by its dedicated board members, who have funded various projects through personal contributions and the donation of their time. One of their most successful initiatives involves installing wood duck nest boxes on various properties to enhance the survival rate of wood duck populations. The result has been a noticeable increase in the success of wood duck hatchlings in areas where these nesting boxes have been placed.

Additionally, the Shelter Foundation has taken a unique approach to conservation by planting oak trees grown from acorns. These trees, once they reach maturity, become a crucial source of food for a wide range of wildlife, from squirrels and hogs to deer and waterfowl. As these trees mature and produce acorns, the wildlife population has thrived, thanks to the efforts of the Shelter Foundation.

Another key aspect of the foundation's work is the non-displacement of beavers, which encourages the building of dams and berms, leading to the creation of wetlands. This habitat provides shelter and sustenance for numerous species of animals. The beaver population has flourished in areas where the foundation has allowed them to remain undisturbed, showcasing their role as brilliant engineers in the natural world.
