Mission Statement of Casa Of Johnson & Wyandotte Counties Inc
Casa of Johnson & Wyandotte Counties Inc is committed to providing a meaningful voice and connection that instills hope and builds resilience for children who have experienced abuse and neglect. The organization's mission is to serve children involved in the court system due to emotional, physical, or sexual abuse, or neglect. A trained volunteer from Casa is assigned to work one-on-one with the child, gathering objective information from various parties such as parents, social workers, teachers, doctors, therapists, and foster parents. Prior to court hearings, the Casa volunteer meets with numerous professionals and caregivers involved and makes a written report to the court regarding actions in the best interest of the child. Casa volunteers remain assigned until a permanent resolution and placement of the child is achieved.
During 2022, Casa served 414 children in court proceedings and provided advocacy support to 249 families. Casa mobilized 232 volunteers who provided 19,212 hours of support services, facilitating the adoption of 44 children, reunification of 42 children with their parents, and placement of 4 children with a guardian. Older youth are less likely to find a permanent home through adoption or legal guardianship, resulting in many of them "aging out" of foster care without the necessary tools, resources, and support to be self-sufficient. To address this issue, Casa has a Teen Advocacy Program that pairs teens with specially-trained Casa volunteers to guide and support them during their critical transition to independence. The presence of these specially-trained Casas can have profound impacts on the teens' educational, employment, and social outcomes.
In addition to the Child Advocacy Program and Teen Advocacy Program, Casa also has a Divorce/Custody Program that serves children whose families are involved in court due to disputes over child custody and visitation. A trained Casa volunteer is assigned to work one-on-one with the child and helps create a support system for the family by making them aware of existing community resources. The volunteer helps focus attention on the needs of the child, monitors court orders, and reports findings and concerns in a written report to the court.
