This mission is achieved by engaging East Palo Alto youth, aged 8-25, in a variety of creative youth development programs. These initiatives help nurture their inherent voices, foster their sense of creative agency, and equip them with the creative, critical thinking, and socio-emotional skills necessary for success.
Epacenter offers free, culturally responsive instruction in design and the visual, literary, and performing arts. These classes are available in-school, after-school, and during the summer. Furthermore, Epacenter encourages youth participation in organizational decision-making, key leadership roles, and cultural leadership opportunities. Additionally, the organization links young people to meaningful summer employment opportunities, college, and career prospects. Lastly, Epacenter stimulates their sense of civic engagement as both citizens and artists.
In 2015, the John & Marcia Goldman Foundation established the East Palo Alto Youth Arts and Music Center LLC, which operates under its auspices. With funding from the Goldman Foundation, the LLC purchased property at 1950 Bay Road as a future center and funded the design and construction of a building. The organization, Epacenter, was also established as a separate 501(c)3 organization in anticipation of transitioning all operations from the LLC to the organization upon completion of the new facility. However, the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the opening of the facility and disrupted plans for the transition in 2021. The transition of operations began in 2021, with the completion of all operations taking place in April 2022.
