What is Kalamazoo Literacy Council?

The Kalamazoo Literacy Council (KLC) is a 50-year-old, nonprofit organization based in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Committed to bettering the lives of adults, KLC specializes in enhancing reading, writing, spelling, and comprehension skills for individuals who require assistance. As the sole organization in Kalamazoo County dedicated to providing free basic literacy instruction to adults, KLC has played a significant role in fostering adult literacy for over four decades. KLC operates an adult tutoring program, offering free literacy tutoring and educational materials to adults after they undergo evaluations by the organization. The program matches trained tutors with adult learners for two-hour weekly sessions. Pre- and post-tests are administered to measure progress towards workforce, educational, and personal goals. The council provides tutor training for qualified volunteers in the Laubach Method and maintains approximately 95 active tutors who assist over 239 adults in need of literacy education within the community. In addition to the adult tutoring program, KLC operates the ESL of Southwest Michigan, which provides four levels of English as a Second Language instruction, including language, speaking, listening, and basic literacy. With more than 150 learners from over 45 counties, this is the largest ESL program in Southwest Michigan. The Adult Learning Action Network is another initiative by KLC, which is a group of adult education, workforce development, English as a Second Language (ESL), literacy agencies, and community organizations that meet monthly to establish adult literacy priorities, identify and expand resources, and align services and programs in the county. Since its inception in September 2010, the network has provided a collective voice for adult literacy and shaped community-level goals for adult literacy in Kalamazoo County. With a staff of 7 individuals, the Kalamazoo Literacy Council serves as the facilitating agency for the Adult Learning Action Network and remains the leading voice for adult literacy in the Kalamazoo County area.
