Overview

What is St Bartholomew's Conservancy Inc?

St. Bartholomew's Conservancy Inc is a New York-based nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and restoring the historic St. Bartholomew's Church site, a landmark in the city since 1967 and a national historic landmark since 2016. The conservancy raises funds for the exterior restoration of the site, which includes the church building, community house, and gardens. During the pandemic, public activities were suspended, but the conservancy created a well-received six-part video series as a companion to its gala concert with the Philadelphia Orchestra. The videos served as both event marketing and educational outreach, featuring prominent presenters such as former Met Museum Director Philippe de Montebello and renowned organist Paolo Bordignon. The gala concert, held in May 2022, paired the Philadelphia Orchestra with the monumental St. Bartholomew's pipe organ, the largest in New York City. The sold-out concert, conducted by David Robertson, was a remarkable journey of compositions for organ and orchestra from the 16th to 20th centuries. The event honored BarbaraLee Diamonstein-Spielvogel and Mutual of America Financial Group, both steadfast supporters of historic preservation. The Waldorf Astoria New York and the Joseph & Robert Cornell Memorial Foundation were the concert's lead sponsors. Following the concert, the videos were re-edited as standalone films and made available to the public for free digital streaming, reaching thousands more through the Philadelphia Orchestra's digital stage and the conservancy's website. The streaming production was generously underwritten by Barbara Tober. In addition to its conservation efforts, the conservancy also produced a souvenir CD, "Stokowski & St. Bartholomew's Choir," a beautiful tribute to composer Leopold Stokowski, a former St. Bartholomew's choirmaster. The repertoire, inspired by music performed during Stokowski's last concert in the U.S., was a hit with audiences. The conservancy's work focuses on the Park Avenue West facade, particularly the remarkable triple portal designed by Stanford White in 1903. In November 2021, they hired consultant Matthew Reiley of Excelsior Art Services to undertake a full conservation evaluation of the triple portal and related entryway. The work is ongoing and will culminate in a report with recommended treatments for conservation and preservation. In 2022, the conservancy provided grants totalling $119,241 to St. Bartholomew's Church. The majority of the funds were given to Acheson Doyle Partners Architects, P.C. for architectural design services related to proposed masonry restoration, associated roof and flashings repairs, doors, steps, and the establishment of an appropriate competitive restoration protocol for in-place stained glass restoration for liturgical stained glass units.
