Overview
What is Read To Grow Inc?
Read To Grow Inc, based in Connecticut, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering language skills and literacy in children from birth. Over its 23-year existence, the organization has distributed over 2.6 million books to parents and childcare providers, educating them on the significance of language development and literacy. Each year, they distribute approximately 100,000 books through four programs: Books for Babies, Books for Kids, Early Steps to School Success, and the newest program, the Read To Grow Bookmobile. The organization's operations are supported by a team of staff members and volunteers. The Books for Babies program operates three projects: the Prenatal Project, the Newborn Project, and the NICU Project. The Prenatal Project distributes free children's books and information on brain development and literacy to expecting families receiving prenatal care at community health centers. The Newborn Project operates in 14 partner hospitals, providing literacy packets with books for newborns and parental guides on infant language development. In half of the partner hospitals, trained volunteers visit families to discuss baby brain and literacy development. More than 60% of Connecticut's families with newborns are reached through this program, which also offers a free opt-in follow-up program with additional books and information mailed to enrolled families at their child's three-month and one-year milestones. In Spring 2020, Read To Grow launched a partnership with Connecticut Children's NICU to provide children's books for parents to read to their babies admitted to the NICU. Following a successful pilot year, the organization's Board of Directors officially approved the NICU Project to expand to other sites as funding and partnership opportunities become available. In Winter 2022, Read To Grow launched the NICU Project at Connecticut Children's Farmington location, and in Winter 2023, they launched a third NICU Project site at the Hospital of Central Connecticut in New Britain. The organization's mission is to promote language skills and literacy for children from birth and support families as their babies' first teachers, with a vision that every family in Connecticut will value early childhood literacy and engage in their child's reading development.
